'Tis Near Halloween!

I'm going to try and get the whining out of the way before I get to the fun stuff. I'm so guilty of blog neglect that it's getting ridiculous! I came close to a wee meltdown this morning as I've been feeling very overwhelmed lately. Between work, medical appointments and life/family stuff, I'm being pulled in all directions. For that reason, I need to point out to all the strangers who have been emailing and messaging, asking me to promote their projects, that I'm really sorry, but I just simply don't have the time. Please understand that your request is just one of many (sooooooooo many) that I receive, and even taking the time to read through all the appeals and proposals means I've been neglecting my own work.

One little bit of pressure was relieved recently when my 17 year old son finished the short film he made for a local youth film festival. It's a documentary (with a twist of mockumentary) about his tennis club. Pulling something like this together over the last 6 months wasn't straightforward. He had to schedule people for interviews, get release forms signed, film around inclement winter weather conditions, and in the home stretch, lost a couple of weeks battling a nasty virus... all while keeping up with his studies at school.

His filmmaking projects are made under the name Panic Guy Productions (the logo and illustration above were done by my husband) and never a more apt name there was! My husband and I were up half the night with him giving moral support and feedback before the deadline day for entries.... but he made it! Woohoo! Whether his film gets selected is now in the lap of the gods, and he will no doubt be up against older, more experienced film students, but I could not be more pleased for him that he accomplished this challenge he set for himself.

An Addams-tastic Gift from Magaly
On Friday, I received a package in the mail from the gorgeous Magaly of Magaly Guerrero's Pagan Culture blog. It's no secret that I adore The Addams Family, especially the sixties TV series, so you can just imagine how delighted I was to discover she had sent me a vintage novel based on the show. Yes! I did squeal! I now have another treasure to add to my precious collection of Charles Addams/Addams Family books! Thank you so much, lovely Magaly! ❤

Phoebe and her Zombie Bunny

In other news, my beloved kitty Phoebe turned 19 last Monday! She was spoiled and pampered the entire day... which is pretty much situation normal in my household!

Anyhoo, after being in the midst of a mad filmmaking whirl for months and all the other assorted malarkey that has been going on, I've found myself looking around, bleary-eyed, and realizing that it's October. *gulp* I have so much catching up to do and it is now time that I turn my attention to the approaching Halloween festivities, which includes a couple of Halloweenie blog hops being hosted by my bloggy buddies.

Magical Magaly of Magaly Guerrero's Pagan Culture is having a Halloweenie blog party. The idea is to create something for Halloween (writing, art, craft, cooking, etc.) with a theme of witches or magic, then post about it on October 17. If you aren't able to participate, you're invited to just come along and see what the blog hop contributors have created. You can find out more information at Witches in Fiction... Crafting Blooming Howls.

Author Annie Walls and Black Heart Reviews will be co-hosting the Halloween Nevermore Rapport Blog Hop on October 30. You can do any kind of post you fancy as long as it is has an Edgar Allan Poe theme. Once again, if you aren't able to participate, just come along and enjoy the posts. You can find out more information here.

  1. Sounds like you've had a lot on your plate, Emma! Here's hoping that come the end of the year, you're sitting back by the Christmas tree, sipping Singapore Slings, and having a problem-free time.

Do you ever have any extravagant fun on the very day of Halloween, or are you stuck at work, due to it usually falling on a weekday here in the land of down-under? Darn us wicked non-pagans for not decreeing it a public holiday!

My blog plans for Halloweentime is to review various random entries in the nihilistic German crime series Dr. Mabuse (which includes its silent film origins, and silent inspirations), and various nostalgic shows for me, such as forgotten British paranormal show Powers, Phantom Investigators (another such show, which mixes stop motion animation, puppetry, and real life actors!), Dead Gorgeous, and the entire Worst Witch franchise! I've been very busy, so as you can imagine, most of my time has been spent procrastinating instead of writing.

I do like the sound of that, Chris! :D

We always have fun on Halloween, but it's usually a last minute rush. I would love an organized, relaxed lead-up up to All Hallows' Eve. Something tells me I won't get my wish this year, but perhaps next year I'll conquer the chaos! ;)

Looking forward to your Halloweenie review-a-thon! I meant to tweet you the other day to let you know that your 'Mannequin' review prompted me to finally get the DVD and we had a great time watching the movie last weekend. :)

  2. Dear Emma - I haven't been to visit you in so long and I've missed a lot! I'm so sorry that life is overwhelming at the moment. These times seem to come (and go) in waves through life and are very trying...but you will come out the other side. You must be so proud of your talented son - I would say his documentary is amazing! Happy Birthday to darling Phoebe - at 19 she is truly a Grand Dame! What a beautiful girl! And that lovely parcel from Magaly! So very thoughtful and just the thing to gladden the heart! Halloween! Yay! Let the preparations begin....♥ Siobhan xo

    1. Thank you, lovely Siobhan! ♥ I've missed seeing you about Blogland! Hope all is well in your world?!

I can't help feeling nervous for James. I'd be much more nonchalant about the film if I had entered it. Haha. But when it's your kid... ;)

It's unbelievable to think of Phoebe being 19. Yes, a Grand Dame indeed! :D

Magaly's gift was such a lovely treat! Our little blog community is filled with such wonderful people, your delightful self included! ^_^

      Yay for Halloween!!! ♥ xo

  3. Sounds like a crazy time ! Hope you get a bit of a break now! Good luck to your son and happy birthday to Phoebe! I was going to ask if she was named after Phoebe Halliwell but I don't think the show is that old!

    1. Thank you, Laura! :) ♥

I just looked up 'Charmed' and it's start date was October 7, 1998. Funnily enough, Phoebe's birthday is October 6. She was born in 1995 though, so she came well before Phoebe Halliwell. 'Friends' was on when we got Phoebe, so everyone assumed she was named after Phoebe Buffay. The truth is that Phoebe was such a cute and comical little kitten that somehow the name just seemed to suit her perfectly. Our other cat was named Sabrina, and she was much more dignified and ladylike than little Phoebs. ;D

But dear Emma, don't fret over life getting in the way of blogging - it's exactly as it should be. I hope you r medical issues aren't serious, and I hope your household calms down a bit now when the movie is done and posted.

    1. Thank you, Ms Misantropia! ♥ The worst part is not getting around as much to all my favourite blogs, but I'll try and catch up on everyone's posts over the next few days.

I'm okay, I've just had a load of medical appointments trying to sort out the best way to manage this hiatus hernia/stomach issue I've got. :) Yes, thankfully James' film was finished and entered before his school exams start. Dealing with filmmaking dramas and exam stress together would have been a nightmare. ;)

  9. Happy birthday to Phoebe! Congrats to your son and good luck on his film entry! I'm sorry you've been feeling burned out and stressed. Trying to do everything can be exhausting, so it's better to know your sanity limit and pick and choose what you know won't overwhelm you. You do a great job as far as I'm concerned! :)

  11. So glad to see you back. Hope you are feeling well. I wish your son luck with his film. That is so exciting. Finishing a project like that is amazing.
19?!?! Oh my goodness. She doesn't look her age at all :)
Those blog hops look very fun. Especially the Edgar All Poe themed one (love him!) I'll be following along for sure!

    1. Thank you, Jessie! ♥ I'm just trying to sort out ongoing issues caused by a hiatus hernia that I've got.

Yes, I was so proud that James managed to make the film and enter it by the deadline. So many little unforeseen things went wrong but he kept going. Now, I'm just nervously crossing my fingers, hoping that his film gets selected. :)

Phoebe does have the occasional "senior moment", but yes, she's very youthful considering she's such a "mature" lady! ;)

I'm always impressed with the variety during blog hops. All the different interpretations of the same theme are always fun. Hope to see you there!

  12. I know just too well what you mean about people asking you to promote this and that. I used to replied in the past, then it got out of control and I just skip the emails from strangers. A bit harsh, but the alternative would probably leave me bald--I like my hair.

Are we going to see your son's film?

And your kitty is 19? My goodness, she looks so very youthful. Tell her I wished her much happiness.

I'm very happy you liked the book. It makes me smile!

    1. Ha! Yes, I don't want either of us going bald from the stress of replying to mountains of unsolicited requests for promotion, Magaly. ;) You've actually made me feel much better knowing I'm not the only one getting them... and not the only one no longer responding to them.

If James' film gets selected, he will upload it to YouTube straight after the festival. If it doesn't get selected... it will be uploaded sooner. But we're hoping it will be uploaded later! Haha. Whatever happens, I'll post the link on Facebook. :)

Yes, Phoebe certainly seems to have found the secret to ongoing, youthful good looks. I'll pass on your good wishes to her! ;)

I LOVE the book! :D And the lavender! I have schemes afoot for the lavender! Mwah ha ha!

That Addams family book - eeee! What a lovely, thoughtful gift from one gorgeous lady to another!

And speaking of gorgeous ladies - happy birthday Phoebe, you beautiful ageless gal you! I think you must be drinking from the same fountain of youth as Elvira ;D

Happy Halloween, lovely! Looking forward to seeing your posts for these fabulous upcoming blog hops :) ❤

    1. Aww... thank you, lovely Bec! ❤ We should find out whether the film has been selected around October 22. He'll definitely upload it to his YouTube channel. We're just hoping that it will be *after* the festival rather than *before* the festival! ;)

Yes, Magaly's gift was wonderful! Our little Blogland community is the BEST! ^_^

Ha! Yes, Phoebe and Elvira are both making "maturity" look much more attractive!

As you already know, I can't wait to see your contribution to Magaly's hop! ;D

I love that your boy has made a film, creativeness clearly runs in the family! His logo is brilliant too :)

What a gorgeous book from Magaly, something to huddle up with on a stormy, candlelit night!

Phoebe is just adorable, such a cutie - I'm determinned to photograph at least on of my girls in a witches hat this Halloween.
