For day two of May Monster Madness, I thought I'd share a monster that is bound to be a sentimental favourite for anyone, like me, who loved the Buffy the Vampire Slayer television series.
The Grr! Aargh! Monster is the crudely drawn vampire creature that crosses the screen during the end credits of Buffy. It is the mascot of Buffy/Angel creator, Joss Whedon's, Mutant Enemy production company, and apparently, was drawn and voiced by Whedon himself. At the end of each episode, the monster would make its way past the Mutant Enemy logo uttering, "Grr! Aargh!"
Occasionally, the animation would change slightly to reflect a special episode. I found a clip (above) on YouTube with a compilation of "Grr! Aargh!" variations.
I also found a clip (above) from the episode, "Bargaining - Part One", where the Grr! Aargh! monster is referenced when Tara gives Giles a plastic finger puppet monster as a going away gift.
In the final season of 'Buffy', the "Turok-Han", or
"Ubervamps", seem to have been styled to look like a more detailed
version of the Grr! Aargh! Monster.
Etsy Shop, Branded, sells t-shirts featuring the Grr! Aargh! Monster.

Hi Sacred Keep,
DeleteYeah, me too! And thank you! ❤
ReplyDelete
Yay! I love the Grr Argh monster :D
ReplyDeleteHi Alexandriaweb,
DeleteAs a 'Buffy' fan, this monster has definitely earned a place in my heart! :)
Nice! That little monster always gave me a chuckle. Even my wife (who hated Buffy . . . or, more specifically, hated my crush on Willow) got a kick out of it.
ReplyDeleteHi Bob,
DeleteSo, the Grr! Aargh! Monster defeated the Green-Eyed Monster?!! ;)
I always liked that little loge too. Great find... I am a huge fan of clever little bits of lore.
ReplyDeleteHi WicKED,
DeleteLike all great monsters, Grr! Aargh! could not be contained, and his influence spread far beyond the confines of the end credits!
That always made me laugh, and I never knew any of this. Awesome.
ReplyDeleteNow I wanna stay home sick and watch Buffy and Charmed all day for old time's sake. LOL
Hi pensive,
DeleteAh! Always delighted to be a bad influence. Yep, work bad, Buffy good! ;)
Love that little guy! Fun post!!
ReplyDeleteHi Ali May,
DeleteMe too! And thank you!! :)
I know it's early in the MMM week to say this but...this will probably be my favorite post! Oh...Tara! I have a Mutant Enemy hat sitting around somewhere...
ReplyDeleteHi merricat,
DeleteAww... thank you! I've been looking for an excuse to do a post on Grr! Aargh! and May Monster Madness gave me the perfect opportunity!
A Mutant Enemy hat?!! Fabulous! Were they being sold or did you have some connection with the production company? Either way, impressed and envious! ;)
Thanks for this post - you're right, it was a delightful trip down memory lane. My daughters and I watched every last episode of Buffy and Angel from premiere to finale, and the show wasn't over until we saw the Grr-Aargh Monster!
ReplyDeleteHi Dani,
DeleteMy husband, son, and I (the cat too) have re-watched Buffy and Angel countless times, and yes, "the show wasn't over until we saw the Grr-Aargh Monster!" In fact, I think Grr! Aargh! may be responsible for my son's compulsive need to watch all end credits now! Haha.
I haven't seen any episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. :/ That monster looks pretty cool though.
ReplyDeleteHi Jenny,
DeleteYou probably would have enjoyed Buffy. It wasn't like 'Twilight'. The Grr! Aargh! was cool, and the Ubervamps based on him were very nasty... definitely no sparkling! ;)
I don't like Buffy, but the creature! :D Idol!
ReplyDeleteHi occhio sulle espressioni,
DeleteNo one can resist the Grr Aargh Monster!! :D
My friend was really into Buffy the Vampire Slayer so I've seen a fair few episodes, but all I really remember is this monster, haha. Those variations are pretty awesome - I never noticed them before!
ReplyDeleteHi Lilia,
DeleteYes, the Grr Aargh Monster was always a treat, but it was extra special when he did something out of the ordinary!
How funny! I loved the "Grr! Aargh!" moment at the end of Buffy. Nice to know someone else appreciated it as well. :) I was just talking about those little monster finger puppets on twitter a day or two ago. That's so funny! I strangely don't remember watching that clip, though.
ReplyDeleteHi Justine,
DeleteI used to have a ton of those little monster finger puppets. When James was just a baby, a liquid soap brand was giving them away with each bottle, only they were calling them "germs" rather than monsters. We collected so many of them. I eventually gave a lot of them away to charity, but we still have about 10 or so. They're so adorable with their thin, wobbly arms, and I also have a sentimental attachment to them because they remind me of Buffy! :)
haha and I thought I was the only one who loved that guy. I still 'til this day say "Grr Argh" Great homage to something only Buffy fans can appreciate.
ReplyDeleteHi Mike,
DeleteThank you! As you can see from the comments here, there seem to be quite a few of us with a soft spot for Grr! Aargh! :D
